How should I prepare for my total joint replacement?
At least one month before hip or knee replacement surgery it's best to:
1. Under the care of a physical therapist, begin a specific exercise program similar to what you will want to participate in after surgery.
2. Have your family physician clear you for surgery early so that any medical problems can be corrected beforehand if necessary.
3. Be sure you are not carrying any staph (MRSA) or other bacteria, by having your doctor send you for appropriate cultures.
4. Have a physical therapist do a pre-op home safety check to literally smooth the pathways in your house, so it is ready for your return home.
5. Plan to have someone able to care for you at home soon after surgery so you can take advantage of the rapid discharge schedules (first or second day post-op) available today.
